A potter’s experience of slurry casting with a plaster mold

The text you are reading is a translation of the blog of a Swedish potter named Frida, who briefly and with illustrative pictures shared her experience of casting mortar with a plaster mold.

When I work with clay, I tend to roll and roll, but this week I was asked if you might want to test some plaster casts. How luxurious! So my husband and I went to Swarting.
I got 48 super nice molds! But since I knew nothing about slurry casting, I had Teresa come to my workshop to teach me a thing or two. And yesterday she was here! What fun it was. I was completely obsessed before. Here’s what we did:

  • The work started by preparing the slurry and mixing it to get a uniform and homogeneous slurry.
  • The next step was to pair and check the molds.
After checking the molds, we fastened them with a belt or elastic so they did not separate.
  • The next step was to pour the ceramic slurry into the mold until the feeding tank was full.
  • Here we only had to wait for the ceramic thickness to be formed to the required size.

  • After forming the required thickness, the excess slurry was drained.
The mold must then remain unloaded for some time before it is returned.
We cut off the excess around the opening of the mold and let it dry a little.

  • After opening the mold, it was unbelievable how the surface was clean and smooth

  • After removing the piece from the plaster mold, around the mold seam and slurry inlet, needed a little polishing.

  • Finally, the result of my one amazing day was these samples:

A dream experience

A great day with a lovely result, my summer plan was to get some plaster molds and do some castings. If you don’t have the opportunity or the possibility to make molds for casting the slurry you want, it’s not a problem, there are ready-made plaster molds, as well as baked ceramic biscuits. You can have fun with your art and paint. I will cast a little more today, my energy is at its maximum.
